When I went to the Western Wall, I was a little kid, so I didn't really get what was going on, but some guy said horrible upsetting things to my friend Emily who wore a yarmulke there.
I can't add anything, really, because as far as privilege goes, I've got you beat, but this is the kind of thing that I think should bother all Jews. It is absolutely not reasonable for us to allow our shared spaces to be run by chauvinist fundamentalists. And more of us need to speak out about it. Privilege is not the same as God, and it has no place in a religion that, for a lot of us, is about egalitarian modes of prayer and community.

Someone we both know told me she was concerned about your time in Israel with people you didn't know, what with all the extremist (on both sides) opinions out there. I told her I thought your experience being clear on your beliefs and your ability to stand up for them already at this point in your life would mean that you'd be okay. I said "Sammy will just be herself..." Cool that I was right!

I came from femniste, and the thing I think I'd ask about this is-but what about the fact that radicalism does have costs? It shouldn't diminish what you do-I'd say just the opposite-but every norm that someone violates does have a little bit of a social capital cost. And people are in varying positions to be able and willing to pay that. Kind of a modification of the spoon metaphor. The job interview thing above is a good example-or make up. Can I say "I'm not changing how I look to make people happy so I get this job"? sure-technically anyone can. But, if you can afford to do that(and maybe not get the job) and still eat depends on how much privilege you're coming from. So, I do agree that there's some privilege involved in radicalism. It doesn't make it less useful for you to work towards what is right.

I hear this pretty hard. Some of my choices are easier too, I'm conventionally attractive albeit on the heavier side where I'm supposed to diet always and be sad, but not so much that people constantly ask about my health. I think it is important to recognize that this does give me some privilege, but that doesn't invalidate my choices or beliefs. The thing about this special kind of attractive lady privilege is that it also sucks: people ask me why I try do hard to be ugly when I don't shave or wear makeup or tight fitting clothes. I had a forty I've minute argument with a coworker who was convinced that I should go into plus size modeling instead of politics even though I have no interest. When I try to tell people that I'm not interested in stuff like that they act personally insulted - how could I throw away this incredible gift? Let's not even talk about how much shit I get/have gotten in the workplace for not "living up to my potential" IE dressing a certain way and shaving and wearing makeup.

I guess maybe the whole point if this comment is "intersectionality" because even if looking conventionally attractive gives you some privileges, we're ladies and those privileges are frequently also bullshit designed to remind us that the only thing that matters is how we look.
