…that PETA fucking sucks.

It’s just so horribly unsubtle and unoriginal. Aside form being offensive and fucking dumb. Comparing women to animals is not revolutionary or edgy – it’s the status quo.

Tales from the Club

These books really scared me when I was little, and I admit that working at Sunningdale Country Club isn’t nearly as mortifying. It isn’t really very scary at all. Here are some anecdotes from the past few weeks that I’ve been mulling over.

One day during mealtime, we were (again) discussing how spoiled I may or may not be (I guess I’ll leave that can of worms for a later post). I playfully announced something like “say whatever you want about me, I know who I am, I don’t give a fuuuuck.” Without missing a beat, one of my (male!) coworkers leaned back in his chair, turned to the dude next to him, and said “Yo, Sammy’s a slut.” I laughed, mostly because of all the things you might call me, “slut” is probably the least applicable. I retorted with that, and added, “anyway, you wouldn’t mind so much if I was a slut, now would you.” I thought that was pretty clever. But later, what got to me was how quickly this guy chose his poison – what could be worse than being a slut!? Every girl knows that that’s the worst thing you could be called, right? Ouch! Gah, what an uninspired insult. Especially because I wouldn’t be offended even if I were someone who fit into that category, as he defined it. Eh.

Yesterday, there was some drama. I’ll spare you the details, but in all the tumult, one of my coworkers mentioned a longstanding rumor that so-and-so had slept with the boss, and that’s why she got such special treatment. My other friend offhandedly said that when she got the day off the previous weekend (her boyfriend was in town!), someone said “how’d you get that day off? Sleeping with the boss??” No, of course not – she asked him and explained the situation, and he agreed. Has any male ever had to deal with that kind of assumption? If a dude receives something on the job – like a pay raise, a day off, a special job, nobody assumes it has to do with anything other than his merit and his skill. But for women? No, it’s probably got to do with her sexuality, she probably got what she wanted by suing her body – since that’s all women are good for.

It’s been great working so far, and it’s nice to finally have a real job. But there’s a lot going on, and I keep thinking that someone should be writing a thesis about whatever is going on that day (or at least someone should be filming it for a reality TV show). There’s gender tension, interesting differences in sexuality, privilege and race, all among all our cultural and geographical differences. Most of the staff is South African, with some Brazilian, Russian, Romanian, Albanian and Mexican people as well. Anyway, it sure makes for a dynamic workplace.
